Musical Instrument - “The Violin”
The look of a violin brings to mind a classical instrument of sound. The unique shape of the violin body has remained the same over the centuries, originating from hand-crafted hardwood design, evoking sound that stimulates and heightens the senses.
As a young child I grew up listening to some classical violin music, but mostly folk and fiddle music. The enjoyment of hearing the sound of the violin, lead me to enroll in violin lessons at the young age of seven years. During this time I had the opportunity to be taught by a professional violinist with the North Bay Symphony Orchestra over a period of five years. Truly the violin is music to my ears.
The violin is a natural visual choice for me to choose for this project. The focal point of the photos are to make the violin part of an advertisement. I chose to put the model and background in black and white while keeping the focus of the violin in full colour. This technique allows and directs the viewer’s sight to the shape, colour, and size of the violin being held by the young woman standing in the background.
I photographed the violin in a studio setting, with a low key setup that contained five lights in one set. I instructed the model regarding how to hold the violin and position her fingers accordingly along with proper body posture. Emphasis was placed directly onto the fine features of the musical instrument. The desired effect of these photographs enhances the feeling of anticipated classical music through the violin.
